Solving Google API Key Issues for Website Maps
If your website’s maps aren’t displaying properly or you're experiencing problems with other location based widgets, the most common cause is an issue with the Google API key. In this guide, we’ll walk you through some troubleshooting steps to ensure everything is correctly set up on your website.
1. Check for an Installed API Key
The first thing to check is whether your Google API key is properly installed on your website.
- Scroll down to the bottom of your home page and log in to your Dashboard.
- Navigate to Configuration > Google APIs.
- In this section, you should see a field labeled Enter Google API Key.
- If this field is empty, it means your website does not have an API key set up. To create a new key, please follow our detailed guide: Creating a Google Maps API Key
- If you already have a key installed but the maps are still not working, the issue may lie with your Google Cloud account. Let’s go over some things to check in your Google Cloud Console.
2. Check Your Trial Account Status
- Visit the Google Cloud Console and ensure you are signed in with the correct account.
- On the homepage, look for any notifications at the top of the screen.
- If your trial period has ended, you may see a message asking you to activate your full account.
- Follow the prompts to upgrade to a full account.
If you’ve already activated your full account and maps are still not working, there may be an issue with your payment details.
- From the Google Cloud Console, open the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.
- Select Billing > Payment Overview.
- Review your payment methods to ensure that your credit or debit card is still valid.
- If your card is expired or has been canceled, you’ll see a notification to update your payment information.
- Click Update to provide new card details.
- Once the card information has been updated, navigate back to Billing Account Overview to check if your billing account was closed.
- If it is closed, click Account Management, then Reopen Billing Account to ensure your Google Cloud services remain active.
IMPORTANT:
A billing account is required to verify that you are not a robot.
Google provides a monthly $200 credit for Maps API usage, which covers
the cost for most websites. On average, a website uses only $30-$40 of
this credit each month, keeping you well within the free tier. Exceeding
this threshold would indicate incredibly high traffic on your website.
Don't worry, Google will notify you if you approach the limit.
